Spinal Traction Therapy

Chiropractic involves more than manual massage and manipulation of the joints etc. Chiropractors make use of many therapeutic techniques, one of which is spinal traction therapy.

What is Spinal Traction Therapy

Spinal traction therapy is a form of spinal decompression therapy. It is a low force technique used by chiropractors to treat:

  • Slipped or Herniated Discs
  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Pinched Nerves

Alongside various other back and leg related problems. Spinal traction therapy involves restraining the legs at the ankles then lowering the bottom half of the table to create a traction force in the lumbar spine.

How does it work?

The table creates negative pressure in the area being treated through a series of pulls, holds and releases. This negative pressure in the spine can often help bulging disc’s get pulled back into their correct position.

Additionally, due to increased circulation in the area, there is an increased nutrient flow, which is beneficial for the healing process.

Why use a traction table?

Spinal traction therapy can be performed by hand (manual therapy) or with the use of a traction table (mechanical therapy). Traction is the conservative treatment of choice for spinal disc problems.

A traction table is a specialised medical treatment device. The movements are undertaken in a controlled manner. This is generally thought to generate better results than  manual traction therapy.

The benefits of traction therapy

Traction therapy is a useful way to treat many issues that can arise in the spine and surrounding areas including:

  • Pinched nerves
  • Bone spurs
  • Slipped discs
  • Herniated discs
  • Facet disease
  • Sciatica
  • Foramina stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease

There are many studies that show that Traction Therapy has long-lasting beneficial effects for back pain*.

Like nearly all Chiropractic treatments, traction therapy is a non-invasive form of therapy. In most cases, it is painless and relaxing.

Is it for me?

Potentially. Traction therapy can often be an effective way of reducing or eliminating the pain and discomfort associated with back pain. This can even be the case for people who have had chiropractic treatment or surgery in the past.

The suitability of Traction Therapy will depend on the individual patient, and their general levels of health and well being at the time of seeking treatment.
